And it’s a summer book, about a girl whose family returns to the same beachside motel for their vacations every year (“I call it our cottage. It’s a simple story celebrating ordinary wonders, the things we can count on, articulated in the perfect, slight-wistful child’s eye view that Larsen is becoming known for. And happily, it’s everything I was hoping it would be. I enjoy his company immensely, and have been oh so looking forward to his new book, See You Next Summer, illustrated by Todd Stewart. We met first at the library, obviously, and because we live in the same neighbourhood, we get to walk together to school pick-up when circumstances are fortuitous. Since then I’ve raved about his other books, including In the Tree House and Bye Bye Butterflies, and even more important (though not more important than that he was a finalist for the TD Children’s Literature Award in November), Andrew has become my friend. Our first Andrew Larsen book was The Imaginary Garden, which was a Best Book of the Library Haul almost 4 years ago. MaSee You Next Year by Andrew Larsen and Todd Stewart

“In Real Life” is a quick read that still packs a punch in the acceptance of the difference between expectations and reality. Molecular technology is progressing at a remarkable speed, and the sensational de-extinction projects that were once the exclusive preserve of the Hollywood big screen are rapidly becoming the stuff of research grants. What motivates us to identify these species as ideal candidates, and what should be motivating us? But surely one of the most iconic creatures in the running for best de-extinction candidate is the mammoth. The responses were much as you would expect: the most spectacular and charismatic animals secured the most votes, with creatures such as the dodo, the moa and the Tasmanian tiger dominating the top slots. “Choose an extinct species that you’d like to see brought back to life”: this was the challenge posed by evolutionary biologist Beth Shapiro to a class of her graduate students at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Side note: The short story will be put up as a freebie on my web site,, at some point in the next few weeks. Working in that world again was really fun. Having said that, I spent last weekend working on a short story set in the Mount Char universe. I think I might have an idea for how to get around that, but there are also some issues around creating a satisfying character arc. I'll be a little bit vague here to avoid spoilers, but there are reasons why it might be tricky to find a suitable antagonist for this hypothetical sequel. The short answer is "probably."
